This weekend in Oklahoma

Get ready folks there’s a ton of stuff to do this weekend in Oklahoma!

I’m slightly jealous of Tulsa and the fact that they have Cain’s Ballroom. It seems there’s always something going on it and this weekend is no exception. Ghostland Observatory plays on Friday night, Ian Moore on Saturday and several others throughout the weekend and early next week.

Here’s a FREE family-friendly event! Every second Saturday of the month is Free Family Day at Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum. Stop by anytime from 10:30 am – 4 pm to experiment with hands-on art projects, go on a scavenger hunt, take a tour of the museum and much more.

Also, make sure to cheer on the Tulsa Oilers this Friday and Saturday at the BOK Center and go see The Crucible this Friday through Sunday at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Okay, for those of us living in the 4-0-5, there are a ton of things to do here as well:

These days it seems everyone is looking for a deal. If that includes you, make sure to check out the Buchanan Vintage Flea Market this Saturday and Sunday at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. This monthly market is one of the finest and most respected antique and collectible markets in the state and admission only $3 for both days.

Bricktown is always the place to be on the weekends. This Friday night red dirt music star Wade Bowen performs at the Wormy Dog Saloon and tickets are $12.

Families should make time to visit the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum this Saturday, when the museum is offering free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum uses high-tech, interactive exhibits to showcase the famous and not-so-famous Oklahomans who have impacted the state, country and world.

Other events to check out include Curious George at the Cox Convention Center, the Second Friday Circuit of Art in Norman, the American Indian Fest on Saturday and the Thunder versus the Clippers at Ford Center on Sunday night.

Enjoy your weekend!

Iron Starr BBQ

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to try out the new Iron Starr BBQ in Norman. It was all kinds of fantastic.

The location is very quaint, tucked away in the heart of Campus Corner. The restaurant is sophisticated and classy, but still boasts a casual, comfortable air. I had the BBQ Club sandwich and Fancy Mac & Cheese. The entire experience was superb and Iron Starr BBQ receives my highest recommendation!

There are a lot of great places to eat on Campus Corner! Go to wimgo.com and review your favorite Campus Corner restaurants. You can see how I rated some of my favorites and a how others reviewed Campus Corner restaurants including Victoria’s Pasta Shop, La Luna, and more.

Things to Do in Oklahoma

Although the weather has been a bit dreary lately, there are a lot of events around the state this week that will cheer you right up!

-Go see Skillet along with special guests, Hawk Nelson and Decyfer Down, at SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa on Thursday night. Tickets start at only $25.

-The most talked about concert in Oklahoma is this weekend!  That’s right, U2 and The Black Eyed Peas take the stage on Sunday at Memorial Stadium in Norman.
(Congrats to wimgo’s U2 ticket winners: Mike Weisbecker, Jenifer Cromling, and Larry Cornelius!)

-Theatre events include:
The ancient Greek masterpiece “Antigone” performs now through October 24 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening.  Antigone is a powerful play written in 440 BC by Sophocles. The well-known tragedy focuses on several different themes including state control, natural law, civil disobedience, and citizenship, family, and the portrayal of the gods.  The show starts at 8 pm at City Arts Center Theater and tickets are only $15.

Check out “Fat Pig” at Ghostlight Theatre Club in the Paseo District this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Tickets for this enlightening show are an affordable $15. This sharply drawn play not only critiques our slavish adherence to Hollywood ideals of beauty but boldly questions our own ability to change what we dislike about ourselves.

-Football.  As you probably know, this Saturday is the infamous Red River Shootout between the OU Sooners and Texas Longhorns in Dallas.  Also on Saturday, the OSU Cowboys host the Missouri Tigers at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

Visit wimgo for details on these events and many others throughout Oklahoma.

-Have fun!

U2 in OK

I heard today that in preparation for Sunday’s U2 concert in Norman, the city has already begun re-routing traffic and clearing the streets to make way for the Irish band’s entourage and equipment. May sound extreme, but this is one of the largest acts to hit Oklahoma in quite a while and “The Claw”, U2′s stage, takes nearly a week to assemble. Obviously, this is a one-of-a-kind show and you won’t want to miss it!

Perhaps you didn’t purchase tickets and are kicking yourself for that very reason. Well, no worries! Wimgo is giving away 2 VIP tickets and 4 general admission tickets for the show. Just visit wimgo.com/U2  for details and to enter to win.

The winners will be chosen and contacted on Wednesday, October 14th.

Good luck!

NMF 2

I have to be honest, I had never heard of the band Of Montreal until wimgo’s involvement in the Norman Music Festival.  After successfully googling and youtubing the band, I was intrigued and excited to see their performance in Norman.

The day was a whirlwind.  Literally.  The wind was atrocious, but it did not deter the 25,000 fans eager to see local and national acts across the 11 stages.  We were all exhausted after a long day of handing out goodies to the crowd, but I just had to stick around and watch Of Montreal’s performance.  Unfortunately, there were far too many people for me to find a good place to watch and I left during their third song.  I guess I’ll just have to settle for youtube.  Do yourself a favor and watch their “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse” video.  You won’t be sorry.

Anyway, the event was a phenomenal success.  Kudos to the folks with the NMF and the Norman Arts Council for presenting such a high caliber event!

Mark your calendar for NMF 3 in April 2010 – you won’t want to miss it.
