2011 Oklahoma Memorial Day/Weekend Events

Memorial Weekend is just a few short days away. Whether you plan to kick-back and relax or want to have a bit of fun, there’s something for everyone this weekend.

Big 12 Baseball Championship

Where: Bricktown Ballpark (2 South Mickey Mantle Drive, OKC)
When: Wednesday – Sunday
About: The top-8 teams will compete to see who will be crowned the Big 12 Post Season Champion and will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

The Verve Pipe

Where: The Marquee (222 N. Main, Tulsa)
When: Friday, 8 p.m.
About: Live musical concert with The Verve Pipe. General admission tickets are $15.

John Conlee

Where: Riverwind Casino (1544 W. State Highway 9, Norman)
When: Friday, 8 p.m.

Rhythm Q’s and Blues

Where: Hafer Park (1034 S. Bryant, Edmond)

About: This is Edmond’s inaugural “Celebration of Rhythm, Barbeque and Blues” featuring a world-class barbeque cook-off contest officially sanctioned by the

Backwoods Bash

About: The rodeo includes bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and more

Celebration of Freedom

Where: Downtown Hobart (507 S Main, Hobart, OK)
When: Friday – Monday
About: Event includes a Patriot Parade, concert, arts on the square, crafters, performing artists, street dance, food and drink vendors, motorcycle poker run, softball and fishing tournament and much more.

5th Annual Music & Mayhem Festival

Where: Eufaula Cove Amphitheater
When: Saturday, 4:15 p.m.
About: See country star Gary Allan, along with the Randy Rogers Band and Jason Boland and the Stragglers. General admission tickets start at just $23.

Bethany 66 Festival

Where: Route 66 (between Asbury and College, Bethany)
When: Saturday, 11: a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
About: The festival includes a classic car show and sidewalk sale and closes with a concert by Mountain Smoke in Cantrell Hall on the SNU campus at 6:00 p.m.

Bigheart Day

Where: Downtown Main (Barnsdall, OK)
When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
About: This family event includes a fishing derby, games, arts and crafts, vendor booths, live music, fireworks and a parade.

Bricktown Brawlers vs. West Texas Roughnecks

Where: Cox Convention Center (1 Myriad Gardens, OKC)
When: Saturday, 7 p.m.
About: Indoor Football game with the Bricktown Brawlers and West Texas Roughnecks. Tickets start at $15.

Ham Jam Festival

Where: Bow Safari Route (1 Box 820, Coalgate, OK)
When: Saturday
About: Event includes a live concert Saturday night, BBQ, kids events, Traders Market and a Fetch & Fish Tank. Enter the Hog Dog Tournament, the 3D Archery Tournament and/or the Tree Stand Hog Hunt Tournament!

Memorial Day Weekend Festival

Where: Carlton Landing at Lake Eufaula
When: Saturday 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.
About: The local VFW Post 8798 will raise the first flag at the new Pavilion Park. A sanctioned Regional Chili Cook-off will be one of the main attractions of the day. Also includes jump tents, face painting and local volunteers who will help the younger guests construct, decorate and fly their very own kite.

Okie Flyers Fly-In

Where: Claremore Regional Airport (19502 E Rogers Post, Claremore)
When: Saturday,  11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
About: Pilots from surrounding states will converge on Claremore for a pilot’s luncheon, the chance to show off their planes and to view presentations of various aircraft from the region.

Pioneer Day

Where: Watonga Main Street (100 E Main, Watonga)
When: Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
About: Pioneer Day features horseshoe pitching contests, cow chip throwing contests, live music and food vendors as well as a parade honoring pioneer families and businesses in town, American Indian dancers, clowns, horses and much more.

Route 66 Cruise Night

Where: Waylan’s Ku-Ku Drive-In (915 N Main, Miami)
When: Saturday, 6 p.m.
About: Live music, door prizes, dash plaques, games, family fun and much more make this an exciting regional event.

ACRA National Championship

Where: Chesapeake Boathouse (725 S Lincoln Blvd., OKC)
When: Saturday & Sunday
About: One of the largest intercollegiate rowing championships in the world, the ACRA National Championship is a two-day racing event that features 2,000 meter sweep and sculling races. Watch as top collegiate club rowers from across the nation compete for national championship titles.

Boley Rodeo and BBQ Festival

Where: Historical Park Main Street (Boley, OK)
When: Saturday & Sunday
About: This event includes a BBQ festival, parade, rodeo, R&B concert, and more.

Chuck Wagon Gathering and Children’s Cowboy Festival

Where: National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (1700 NE 63, OKC)
When: Saturday & Sunday
About: Chosen by the American Bus Association in 2004 as one of the Top 100 Events in North America, this exciting event attracts more than 10,000 people. This event includes mouth-watering campfire cooked foods, children’s activities, Western stage entertainment and stagecoach and pony rides.

Edmond Jazz and Blues Festival
Where: Stephenson Park (4th & Littler, Edmond)
When: Saturday & Sunday
About: Live Jazz & Blues bands performing the entire festival to honor our Veterans. Also includes great food, drink and entertainment for the entire family. FREE ADMISSION!

Oklahoma Renaissance Festival

Where: Castle of Muskogee
When: Saturday – Monday
About: Step back in time to days of old with King Henry VIII, Queen Margaret of Scotland, the Royal Court, jousters, jesters, jugglers, magicians, musicians and minstrels. Delight your taste buds with the wonderful and unique foods of the day. Browse through the more than 100 handcrafted booths with one of a kind items. Admission is $14.95.

Paseo Arts Festival 2011

Where: Paseo District (3022 Paseo, OKC)
When: Saturday – Monday
About: A showcase for the original works of visual artists selected by jury, along with performance art and live music. The festival is held in the historic Paseo Arts District.

Memorial Day at the Races!

Where: Remington Park Racing and Casino (1 Remington Place, OKC)
When: Monday, 1:30pm- 5:00pm
About: Activities for the whole family out on the plaza: $1.00 hot dogs, beer, soft drinks, racing programs, live music on the plaza in-between the races. Free!

45th Infantry Division Museum: Memorial Day Ceremony

Where: 45th Infantry Division Museum (2145 NE 36, OKC)
When: Monday, 10 a.m.
About: The ceremony pays tribute to the men and women who have served in our Nations Armed Forces and honors those who have paid the ultimate price in service to their country. The event includes a helicopter flyover, massing of the colors, patriotic music and distinguished guest speakers.

St. Patrick’s Day 2011 – OKC

Get ready! St. Patrick’s Day is only 10 short days away.

I’ve rounded up all of the St. Patrick’s Day events in the Oklahoma City area right here for you as well as some that are before and after the 17th. Know of something I’m missing? Details: Got some extra cash? Don’t miss the Green Tie Gala, which is Catholic Charities annual fundraiser. Proceeds benefit the Sanctuary Women’s Development Center. Tickets are $125.

3. Irish Dancers

2 – 3 p.m.
Details: This annual event is an all ages show where you can see the Jean Hill Irish Dancers. I admit, the picture is a little scary but I bet the event is lots o’ fun!

4. WrestleMania

3 p.m.
Details: Okay, okay, this doesn’t really have anything to do with St. Patrick’s Day. But there is a wrestler named “Celtic Warrior” so I thought he should get some St. Patty’s Day love – even though Celtic and Irish aren’t really the same thing. Anyway, tickets are $15.

5. You Are So Lucky!

Wednesday, March 16
2 – 4 p.m.
Details: This is an event for the kids (ages 8-12. Anyone under 8 is welcome to attend with an adult). Celebrate the holiday with stories, crafts and snacks.

6. St. Patrick’s Day Cruise
Oklahoma River
Thursday, March 17
5:30 – 7 p.m.
Details: Enjoy a 90 minute theme cruise on the Oklahoma River complete with music, appetizers and beverages. All  cruises depart from Regatta park. Interested? Book now. Theme cruises allow a minimum of 12 people. Cost is $35/person.

7.  St. Patrick’s Day Block Party
Bricktown
Thursday, March 17
12 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Details:  This annual festival is held outdoors at the corner of Sheridan and Oklahoma Avenues in Bricktown. Live music, green beer, hats, t-shirts and FREE admission. The event will take place rain or shine.

8. St. Patty’s Day Mayhem at the Market

Thursday, March 17
Details:  This is a boxing/MMA event. If you really want to go all out, VIP tables are available for $350 (beer and food included). Don’t want to shell out your Benjamins? Individual tickets are just $15 at the door.

1 p.m.
Details: The parade begins at 5th and Broadway and runs south on E.K. Gaylord, turns east on Sheridan and continues through Bricktown. See the usual variety of proud car clubs, antique tall bicycles, Irish dancers, llamas (llamas?!), dogs, horses, floats, clowns and much more.

Tulsa Events: Nov. 8 – 14

Lots of great events to add to your calendar this week.

If you’re in the mood for live music, this week you can get your fill! Go see Colt Ford at Cain’s Ballroom this Thursday night at 8 p.m. Graham Colton will also be performing at Cain’s Ballroom this Friday night and tickets for this native Oklahoman are only $16. Also, don’t miss Elton John along with Leon Russell at the BOK Center this Friday night. Tickets are only $25 and are available online or at the box office. And finally, Coolio will be at the Flytrap Music Hall this Saturday night. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are just $15.50.

The Trey McIntyre Project is this Tuesday and Wednesday at the John H. Williams Theatre. This full-time, year-round company uses the beauty of ballet vocabulary to create dances that clearly convey the emotion and grace of life’s journey.  Also, don’t miss After Miss Julie at the Charles E. Norman Theatre starting this Thursday and Tulsa Symphony’s: The Virtuosity of Our Own at the Chapman Music Hall this Saturday.

Singer/songwriter Susan Werner will bring her live show to the John H. Williams Theatre this Friday night. Werner is an innovative songwriter that blends traditional music styles with a contemporary worldview. Also, be sure to go see Crimes of the Heart this Friday through Sunday also at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Head out to Expo Square this week for events including the Bead Renaissance at Central Park Hall, the Tulsa Flea Market and the Tulsa Arms Show at Quik Trip Center. Also, this Saturday is Free Family Day at the Philbrook Museum.

Tulsa Events: Oct. 25 – 31

Halloween is this Sunday! I, for one, love this day – the costumes, the fun and the CANDY are among a few of my favorite things. Anyone dressing up? If so – let me know what your costume will be in the comment section below. In the meantime, check out some of these events happening around Tulsa this week.

Cain’s Ballroom is the place to be this week! Don’t miss Pretty Lights on Wednesday, Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony on Thursday (who remembers “Tha Crossroads”?) and the 36th Annual Freakers Ball on Saturday. Also, be sure to check out An Evening with Guy Penrod & Jason Crabb at the Mabee Center this Thursday evening.

There are several events in theater this week to add to your calendar. First up, Clue – the Musical is at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center this Thursday through Sunday and tickets are just $13. Also, catch the final performance of the Diary of Anne Frank at the Bartlesville Community Center on Thursday and The Day They Shot John Lennon at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center all weekend long.

The Tulsa Ballet presents Classical Relativity at the Chapman Music Hall this Friday through Sunday. Tickets start at $20 to see this classical ballet performance.

Of course Halloween is just around the corner so don’t miss the Castle of Muskogee Halloween Festival, The 13th Ward Haunted Attraction in Jenks and The Hex House. OKC Events: Oct. 25 – 31

Can you believe this is the last week of October? Time sure does fly! Anyway, check out these events happening around Oklahoma City this week.

If you want to network, make some new connections and have some fun, don’t miss Schmoozapalooza this Tuesday at the Travel and Transportation Building at State Fair Park. This event is your chance to preview the latest products and services from Chamber member exhibitors in a fun and casual networking environment. Also, this Thursday is the last Cocktails on the Skyline Roof Terrace (of the season) at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. 

Multi-platinum country rocker Jason Aldean is bringing his WIDE OPEN arena tour to Oklahoma City on Thursday night. The show will also feature Luke Bryan at the newly named Oklahoma City Arena. Tickets start at $40. Also, Amy Grant is performing at the Oklahoma History Center Thursday evening as well.

Get ready for the most famous B-movie rock ‘n’ roll musical ever – the Rocky Horror Show – at Lyric on the Plaza. Also, go see Phantom of the Opera at the Oklahoma City Civic Center this Saturday and Sunday, Dracula at the Jewel Box Theater and Mindgame at the Ghostlight Theater club all weekend long.

It’s about time! The Oklahoma City Thunder are home this Wednesday and host the Chicago Bulls and are home again on Sunday to take on the Utah Jazz. Cheer on the home team with tickets starting at just $10.

And of course, Halloween is this Sunday. Check out all the spooky haunted houses around the City and be sure to add Haunt the Harn to your calendar. This family-friendly event is at Harn Homestead on Thursday night where kids can trick-or-treat at each of the historic buildings on this site, participate in games and crafts and enjoy a hayride around the ten-acre property.

Also – cheer on the Oklahoma Sooners as they host Colorado this Saturday in Norman.

Tulsa Events: Oct. 18 – 24

Don’t miss these events around Tulsa this week!

First up, check out Oktoberfest 2010 this Thursday through Sunday at the Arkansas River. This event offers fun for the whole family with delicious food, carnival rides, refreshing beverages, live music, dancing, and arts and crafts. The festival also offers authentic markets where you can find all kinds of German items.

The Oklahoma Boulderfest is this weekend as well at Chandler Park. Anyone interested in rock climbing definitely needs to check out this event which includes food, music, overnight camping, and a whole lot of “boul- dering”.

Maroon 5 will be at the BOK Center this Tuesday night for their “Hands All Over” tour. Tickets are still available online and start at $39.50. Also, go see one of the hottest country stars around, Miranda Lambert, with special guest Eric Church this Thursday night at the Spiritbank Event Center. Other live musical performances this week include Amy Grant at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, Lee Brice at Cain’s Ballroom,  Five Finger Death Punch, also at Cain’s Ballroom, and Thousand Foot Krutch at the  Mabee Center.

This Wednesday, The President’s Own United States Marine Band will be at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center and the event is free and open to the public. Also, the Tulsa Symphony presents Masterpieces of Change at the Chapman Music Hall on Saturday and don’t miss An Evening of George Gershwin and Cole Porter at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center this Friday and Saturday.

Other events to add to your calendar include the Oklahoma Video Game Exhibition at Spiritbank Event Center on Saturday and the All About Me Women’s Expo at the Mabee Center this Friday and Saturday.

Tulsa Events: Oct. 11 – 17

There are lots of great events in the Tulsa area this week. Don’t miss out!

First up, cheer on the Oklahoma City Thunder this Tuesday night when they take on the Memphis Grizzlies at the BOK Center. Tickets start at just $12 to catch a sneak peek of the 2010-2011 team.

Indie rock stars and one of my favorite bands, Band of Horses, will be at Cain’s Ballroom this Tuesday night. Tickets are still available for $29. Also at Cain’s this Wednesday evening, don’t miss Chris Knight for just $18. Southern rockers, 38 Special, will be at Million Dollar Elm Casino this Saturday and the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra presents a Tribute to the Beatles this Saturday night at the Spiritbank Event Center.

Freaktoberfest is this Sunday at the Flytrap Music Hall. Don’t miss the event for some live rock and metal music. Also, check out all the haunted houses, pumpkin patches and other fall-ish events happening throughout the month of October.

The Koresh Dance Company will be at the John H. Williams Theatre this Tuesday and Wednesday for $40 and don’t miss The Fearless Honkah Hunters at the Liddy Doegnes Theatre this Friday and Saturday. Also, go see Annie at the Henthorne Performing Arts Center this Friday with tickets starting at just $10.

If you like wine, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Green Country Wine Festival at Stone Bluff Cellars this Saturday. Here you can enjoy award-winning wine, fabulous food, music, arts and craft vendors, a children’s area, wine tasting and winery tours.

It’s time for some hockey! Cheer on the Tulsa Oilers this Friday night at the BOK Center when they take on Wichita. Tickets start at just $10 so the entire family can attend.

OKC Events: Oct. 11 – 17

Oklahoma City is a happenin’ place. But don’t just take my word for it…check out all of the events taking place this week.

First up, don’t miss events at State Fair Park including the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, the Annual Fall RV Show & Closeout Sale this Thursday through Sunday and The Kids Closet Connection Consignment Sale Friday through Sunday in the Hobbies, Arts & Crafts Building. Also, there’s a Gun, Knife & Outdoor Equipment Show this Saturday and Sunday at the Oklahoma Expo Hall.

Check out 3OH!3 along with Hello Goodbye at the Diamond Ballroom this Friday. Tickets are available for just $19. Other performances to add to your calendar include Chris Isaak at Riverwind Casino, No Justice with Mike Ryan at the Wormy Dog Saloon on Friday and Jeff Hobbs and The Jacks at the Wormy Dog on Saturday.

How do you feel about Canadian rockers Nickelback? Whether you love them or hate them, they are a band that keeps producing hits and will be at the Ford Center this Saturday night. Tickets can be purchased online starting at $59.

There are a lot of sporting events this week! Catch a sneak peek of the 2010-2011 Oklahoma City Thunder when they take on CSKA Moscow, who were the 2006 and 2008 Euroleague champions, this Thursday night at the Ford Center. Also, Oklahoma City’s new hockey team, the Barons, are home this Friday and Saturday at the Cox Convention Center. The Oklahoma Sooners are home this Saturday to host Iowa State. If you get down to Norman, be sure to check out GameDay on Campus Corner!

I can’t wait for this event! Comedian and television star Bill Cosby will be at the Civic Center Music Hall this Sunday. There are two shows, one at 2 p.m. and one at 5 p.m., and tickets are just $25 and can be purchased online. Also at the Civic Center this week is the talented, beautiful and oh-so-funny Kristin Chenoweth (who’s also a native Oklahoman). She’ll be performing with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on Friday and Saturday.

Beer lovers unite! Don’t miss the Zoo Brew II at the Oklahoma City Zoo this Friday where you can taste over 30 beers provided by local breweries and distributors. Tickets are on sale now and start at $35.

Don’t miss The Rocky Horror Show at Lyric on the Plaza daily from Wednesday, October 13 until Sunday, October 31. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online. Make sure to use your OKCity Card to get a great discount on Saturday and Sunday matinees.

Also, don’t miss haunted houses around the city, including the Bricktown Haunted Warehouse and Ultimate Terrors located on Northwest Expressway.

Events in Tulsa this Week – Sept. 27 – Oct. 3

The weather looks great this week – but of course, this is Oklahoma so that could quickly change. Anyway, lots of events to check out this week in the Tulsa area. What will you do?

Go see Citizen Cope at Cain’s Ballroom on Thursday for just $28 and Delbert McClinton at Cain’s this Friday night. For a complete list (60 events to be exact!) of live music events happening around Tulsa this week, click here.

The Tulsa State Fair starts this Thursday and runs through Sunday, October 10 at Expo Square. The Fair has a ton of great concerts, including  Gloriana, Katharine McPhee , Third Day, Jamey Johnson and Rick Springfield, which are all free with gate admission. Also, don’t miss events like livestock shows and other competitive exhibits, Disney on Ice and the PRCA rodeo. Search ‘Tulsa State Fair’ on wimgo for a complete list of events.

Check out the Great American Waterfowl Expo this Friday through Sunday at the Spiritbank Event Center. This event lets you visit with premier industry vendors and get your hands on all of the latest waterfowl gear just in time for season.

Several events happening at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center include Concertante on Sunday afternoon, “Bug” the darkly disturbing story of conspiracy, paranoia, love, madness and, yes bugs all weekend long and the family-friendly Click, Clack, Moo Friday and Saturday.

Mentioned it in another post, but have to mention it here, too. It’s OU/Texas weekend! Anyone making the trek to Dallas to watch the game?

Events in OKC this Week – Sept. 27 – Oct. 3

Fall is officially here! I have to admit – I used to be a summer girl – but I’m very happy for the cooler weather these days. Hope you can enjoy the weather and some (or all) of these activities this week around OKC.

If you’re in the mood for some live music, check out the Diamond Ballroom. Concerts on the agenda this week include Flyleaf on Wednesday night, Thirty Seconds to Mars with Anberlin on Thursday and Bleeding Through on Friday. Additionally, don’t miss Left Foot Sally and Bleu Edmondson at the Wormy Dog Saloon, Don Williams at the Rose State Performing Arts Theater and the Back Woods Music Festival with Stoney Larue, Casey Donahew and No Justice at the Lazy J Arena (in Stillwater). Oklahoma City had to suffer an entire season without hockey – and now, it’s back! That’s right, the Oklahoma City Barons season is almost ready to kick off, but before it does the team is giving fans the chance to see the team for the very first time. Don’t miss the Blue/White Intersquad Game held at the Cox Convention Center this Thursday night. The event is free and open to the public. Season ticket holders can pick up their tickets and select Barons merchandise will be available for purchase.

This may be a shocker to some of you, but I don’t really ‘get’ WWE. But I know a lot of people love it. If that’s you, don’t miss seeing your favorite SmackDown and Raw Superstars during the WWE World Tour SuperShow at the Ford Center this Friday night. Tickets are available online and start at just $24.

Head up to the original state capital for Guthrie Escape! this weekend. Come stroll among the artists, taste fine wines from featured wineries, listen to live music at the bandstand and dance in the streets at the Saturday night street dance. While you’re in Guthrie, another event to check out is the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival at Cottonwood Flats. This event features bands from all around the world, a children’s activity tent, instrument workshops and youth contests.

Check out the Canterbury Choral Society – Mendelssohn’s Elijah on Saturday at the Civic Center Music Hall. This fiery performance tells the story of the famous prophet in the Bible, Elijah. Through the style of an oratorio, the story is told through orchestra, chorus and soloists – all representing the characters in the drama. Tickets are available starting at $20.

The Manhattan Short Film Festival is all weekend long at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.  Over 100,000 people in over 200 cities across six continents gather in cinemas, galleries, museums, and cafes for one purpose … to view and vote on the finalists’ films in the annual Manhattan Short Film Festival. Don’t miss it!

Another festival you might be interested in is the Oklahoma Czech Festival. This festival is one of Oklahoma’s largest ethnic festivals and features a carnival, parade, craft booths & boutiques, music, dancing, singing, games, royalty crowning, food, and much more. The parade begins along Route 66 at 10am, while the carnival starts on Friday evening at 5pm and again on Saturday.

Check out the Diary of Anne Frank at the Poteet Theater. The show is Thursday – Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are just $12 to see the play.

Okay, technically this event isn’t in Oklahoma…but it’s one that most Oklahomans are aware of – it’s OU/Texas weekend! Who’s going to cheer on the Sooners and what do you think the final score will be?
